Why KALAKAY?

Ever heard of a Kalavinka? A Kalavinka is a mythical bird in Buddhist and East Asian traditions, often depicted as having a human head and a bird’s body. It is known for its incredibly beautiful singing voice and is associated with paradise and spiritual enlightenment. The term originates from Sanskrit.

When Kay first saw images of Kalavinka statues found in thousand year old caves in China, she embarked on a journey to learn about these stunning creatures. It’s interesting that Kay’s given name as a child born to Russian immigrants living in Australia was Klavdiya, with a pet name of Klavinka — very similar to Kalavinka. So, when choosing an artist name, Kay wanted to expand on her own name and take inspiration from this gorgeous creature.
